Digitalization and Business Model Innovation:
What We Can Learn From the Brockhaus Example
(the talk was given in German)
Bernd Kreissig has worked for more than 20 years in the publishing, education and media sector. Experiences and perspectives from his various roles as a developer, system administrator, product manager and managing director provide the basis for his current activity as a consultant and contractor for innovation and IT in the media sector. At the “Bibliographisches Institut & F.A. Brockhaus AG” publishing house, he was responsible for the new media department from 1996 – 2008.
Kreissig provided insight into his insider’s view of the final years of the Mannheim-based Brockhaus publishing company. Its closure was preceded by a decade of intensive and commercially successful electronic publishing. But if failing to keep up to speed with innovation or failed attempts to innovate were not the cause, how did it get to the point that Brockhaus was unable to carry its role forward into the digital world? What can we learn from this and which signs should companies watch out for in comparable situations?
